Twenty nine people (three officers, 11 members, two guests, six sons, three daughters, two youth guests, and one wife) had a great time at the 11th Annual Winter Dove Retreat on 12/31/03 - 1/3/04 at Lee Ewald’s properties near Dilley. The hunting was good is some spots and poor in others. I, Randy Rowley, my son Ryan, and Kelvin Cheung hunted Mr. Ewald's windmill property on Thursday morning and got ten birds among us, but didn't see a bird there on Thursday night. The tank on the main property was slow on Thursday night and then turned on for about thirty minutes. Derrich Pollock got seven. Friday morning was very slow on the windmill property. We quit about 9:15 AM and headed back to camp and were greeted by what sounded like WW III down at the tank. We hustled to the tank and I bagged five birds in about five minutes! Friday night was very slow except for about the last 15 minutes. At least one limit was shot on Friday (by Ron Denison). Saturday morning was very slow at first but birds finally started to fly at about 8:30 AM. There was heavy cloud cover on each morning of the retreat. Most of us wore short sleeved shirts all weekend. We had our usual group breakfasts and had more food than we could eat. We burned up several boxes of shells at clay targets at the tank by the house. Dennis Koch shared his Ak-47, Derrich Pollock shared his Ruger Model 77, and Tim Price shared his .50 muzzleloader with other members. We were able to shoot rifles and handguns safely into the dry tank by the Ewald's home. Thanks to Jim McGee for teaching a Bible study on Friday night.
