3/28/08 - 3/30/08 Non-Chartered Bay Fishing Trip (sponsored by the Buda Chapter) - Report by David Smith

Two officers and seven first time guests (nine total participants) had a great time at the 3/28/08 - 3/30/08 Non-Chartered Bay Fishing Trip sponsored by the Buda Chapter.

We left Friday morning about 9:00, stopped in Bastrop to pickup Kenney and his boat, stopped in El Campo at Whataburger for lunch, made it to Matagorda, and checked in the house.  Friday afternoon we headed out to the south shore of East Bay.  One of the boats was giving us fits so it was a slow trip over.  When we got to the shoreline several jumped out and waded and the rest drift fished from the boats.  Two keeper trout were caught.  The water was milky in the bay but clear on the shore.  Coley Thompson led a devotional Friday night.

On Saturday morning we awoke to gale force winds.  The bay was choppy and milky.  We went to sough shoreline again.  The water looked trout green but we didn't have any luck.  On Saturday afternoon we had a small feast (grilled pork loins and sausage and beans).  On Saturday evening we went to diversion channel and picked up some dink trout, rat reds, and plenty of hard heads.  The boats split up and after about 30 or 40 minutes, I called the other boat to see how they were doing and they had just spent the last 20 minutes fighting a 4' - 5' alligator gar and had actually gotten it to the boat. Jim Plant had hooked it on a small mullet with no leader and had quite a fight.  About the same time, I accidentally hooked a 4' - 5' alligator and had an interesting time getting the hook loose.  I led a devotional on things Christians can do Saturday night.

Johnny Childress was elected chief cook and bottle washer and did a great job with breakfast and running the grill.

On Sunday morning we went back to the diversion channel and caught 10 or 12 keeper trout.  Some of them were pretty nice.  We started back home about 12:30 or so and made it back at the church about 5:00 PM.
