Three officers and two members had a great time at Upland Bird Hunting Inc.'s 3rd Annual Crawfish Boil and Shoot on 4/28/07. We peeled crawfish until our fingers hurt and then went and shot Wobble Trap and Five Stand until we ran out of shells. Wobble Trap was a blast! The trap rotates from side to side and up and down. Most of the time when you press the button it throws the bird in a different presentation. One bird may be high to the left and the next one may be low and to the right. We were able to do a "Flush" variant. Two shooters stand ready, both with two shells in their guns. The thrower starts to throw birds (without anyone saying "pull") by keeping his finger on the button. The first shooter shoots and two shells and then immediately starts to reload, while the second shooter shoots his two targets and then reloads. The targets are launching every 1.5 seconds so you've got to reload fast! We also tried it with three people, but it's not as challenging as with two.
For the Five Stand course six of the seven traps were working. Trap two was an incoming mini that curved slightly to the right. It was very hard to pick up (twice I didn't pick it up until it was three feet off the ground). Trap three was a high left to right bird that traveled for several yards on its side. Trap four was a far away left to right bird that also traveled on its side and fell fast. Trap five was a far right to left mini that you had to lead about four barrel widths. Trap six was a high left to right bird that required a good lead. Trap seven was a right to left bird that angled away and also required a good lead. I, Randy Rowley, and Joe Schram tied with first place with 34/50 (I shot 17/25 twice and Joe shot 15/25 and 19/25. Kenneth Kidd came in second place with 27/50 (he shot 13/25 and 14/25). Kelvin Cheung came in third place with 19/50 (he shot 12/25 and 7/25). He was followed by Regina Kidd with 1/25 (equivalent of 2/50). The combined group went 115/225 (.511). At our 4/14/07 Sporting Clays Shoot the combined group went 53/100 (.530) and at our 3/17/07 Sporting Clays Shoot the combined group went 295/850 (.347).
The group shot between five and seven boxes each.
Close Shoots
Here's some FCS trivia for you. Kenneth Kidd, Joe Schram, and I have shot together eight times (where all three of us were present) and only five birds separate us. That's some pretty tight shooting!
