7/11/09 Sporting Clays and Skeet Shoot

Our next FCS Sporting Clays and Skeet Shoot will be held on Saturday, 7/11/09, 9:00 - 11:15 AM at the Capitol City Trap & Skeet Range (8707 Lindell Lane, 512-272-4707).

Schedule

09:00 AM - Sporting Clays

10:45 AM - Scores

10:45 AM - Skeet (for those who want to shoot skeet; those who don't can depart)

11:15 AM - Skeet shooters depart

Note that the larger the group, the longer it will take to shoot.

The cost is $18.00/person for a round of 50 sporting clays and $6.00/person for a round of 25 skeet.  All prices do not include tax.  This is a great event to take your family to.  Capitol City requires eye and ear protection (available free of charge at Capitol City).  They sell shotgun shells if you need them (but you can get them much cheaper at Academy and Wal-Mart).  You'll need to bring three boxes of shotshells if you're going to shoot a round of sporting clays and a round of skeet.

I, Randy Rowley, recommend Remington Heavy Dove (Shurshot) and Winchester Game Loads, which are both available at Academy.  The Remington 12 gauge shells each contain 1 1/8 ounces of shot and have a velocity of 1255 FPS.  They regularly sell for $5.99/box.  The Winchester 12 gauge shells each contain 1 ounce of shot and have a velocity of 1290 FPS.  They regularly sell for $5.69/box.  They are both great dove/quail loads in addition to being good clay target loads.  I recommend either 8 shot.  For the course that we shoot (the Hunter or Corporate Course) 7 1/2 shot isn't needed as none of the targets will be at long range.

If you're a dove/quail hunter, I recommend that you shoot sporting clays with the exact same load that you use to hunt dove/quail.  This enables you to develop consistent leads for similar targets.  I also recommend that you use the same gun for shooting clay targets that you use for hunting for the same reason.

FCS membership is not required in order to participate.  We have new or inexperienced shooters almost every shoot, so don't let that stop you.  We delight in teaching people how to shoot better.  If you don't have a shotgun there are many of us who will share our shotguns with you.
