Something that few people know about me: Two of my graduate students designed the 1986 version of the Texas Teacher Appraisal System, based upon my synthesis of two great lines of research. It was cluttered up with extra stuff, administrators didn't use it very well, the teacher unions didn't like it (it discriminated between good and bad teachers); but it improved teaching and achievement in schools where it was used properly.
